How Online Scent Work Classes Work

Our online Canine Nose Work classes are conducted through Zoom, with sessions held weekly. To accommodate the schedules of all our students, the Zoom classes are recorded, ensuring that those who cannot attend in real-time can easily download and access the lesson at their convenience.

Each class typically runs for approximately 45 to 60 minutes, the duration varying based on the number of students in attendance. During the class, we diligently review the weekly assignments that students have uploaded to our dedicated Facebook Group.

Throughout the week, our experienced instructor meticulously examines student-submitted videos, providing constructive feedback, comments, and valuable suggestions for improvement.

Following the video reviews, the instructor delivers the week's homework assignments through an engaging PowerPoint presentation, complete with illustrative example videos. This step helps reinforce the lessons and techniques covered.

Our instructor actively encourages questions and open discussion during the Zoom session, ensuring that all students have a comprehensive understanding of the material. Furthermore, our instructor remains readily available throughout the week to address any training-related queries or challenges that may arise.

Once the Zoom lesson concludes, all class-related files are promptly uploaded to a shared folder, guaranteeing accessibility for at least six months after the class's conclusion. We are committed to providing a comprehensive and flexible learning experience for our students.

Novice Scent Work for AKC and NACSW

"AKC Scent Work is a sport centered on the task of engaging detection dogs in locating a scent and signaling to the handler upon discovery. This detection occurs within diverse environments and frequently under changing conditions. Scent Work serves as a positive, stimulating activity that harnesses a dog's innate, powerful sense of smell." - AKC Rules, Chapter 1

In our Novice Scent Work Class, we initiate the training by having dogs search boxes using a cocktail of scents, including Birch, Anise, Clove and Cypress. The primary objectives of this class are to empower the dog to independently search through 10 closed boxes and accurately identify each individual scent used in both AKC Scent Work and NACSW Nose Work.

"I am so proud of my wonder dog Sutter (CH Contigo's Pannin' For Gold at Sutter Creek, CGC)! We are back home now after attending our very first scent work trials in Eugene, OR sponsored by the Emerald Bay Obedience Club over 3 days of torrential rains.

We were entered in all 5 novice trials fore each of the 3 days. She had a total of 10 qualifying runs and 4 first place finishes with the fastest times on those days. Since she qualified all 3 days in novice buried scent she now has a title for that skill! She only needs one more qualifying run in Handler Discrimination, Containers and Interior search. (She still needs 2 quals for exterior search).

Since this was our first time doing this I have nothing to compare it to but it seemed like a lot of dogs were there... 17 entries for Nov A in most of the events. She was the only toy breed represented and the only other small dogs were 3 terriers (a scotty, a Lakeland and a Westie). The rest of the dogs were hounds and working or sporting breeds and so I was blown away that she had those fast times!!!

Special thanks to Steve Bettcher - our scent work trainer for getting us up to speed for this new sport over zoom!"

 Novice April 2022

As we finish the novice course, I just wanted to send a quick note of thanks. I have really enjoyed this course and the online format has worked well.  Your materials are clear and well developed. While I haven't been able to keep up with all the assignments, I have a clear picture of what I need to do next.  And it's nice to be able to do it in my own home.

I am looking forward to starting the intermediate course.

Advanced 2 - March 2023

I guess we have come to the end of our AKC/NASCW scent work online classroom journey with the last Advanced 2 class.  After multiple years with the same Wednesday group, I wanted to offer my thanks for all your hard work and excellent instruction. I wasn't sure what to expect from an online dog training class, but this format and your materials were excellent.  I couldn't be happier with the skills my dogs have developed (including the dog not officially in the class).  I look forward to sharing our upcoming competition successes with you to demonstrate how much we have learned.

Thank you!
